October 15 is <a href=\"https:\/\/globalhandwashing.org\/global-handwashing-day\/about-ghd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Global Handwashing Day<\/a>, and NTF is celebrating by focusing on the first step of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightbac.org\/food-safety-basics\/the-core-four-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Core Four<\/a> food safety practices: <em>Clean.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germs can easily spread a variety of ways, including on cooking surfaces or utensils and through human contact. A 2014 observational study found that a startling 65 percent of consumers did not wash their hands before starting meal preparation! While foodborne bacteria can\u2019t be seen, tasted or smelled, it can be harmful if ingested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may sound\nobvious, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),\nkeeping hands clean is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid\ngetting sick and spreading harmful germs to others. In the kitchen, handwashing\nis a critical step in preparing healthy, safe meals and preventing foodborne\nillness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC recommends\nfive key steps to handwashing: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pexels-photo-545021-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"soapy hands under a faucet\" class=\"wp-image-6884\" width=\"314\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pexels-photo-545021-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pexels-photo-545021-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pexels-photo-545021-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pexels-photo-545021.jpeg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Wet <\/strong>your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off\nthe tap and apply soap.<\/li><li><strong>Lather<\/strong> your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to\nlather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.<\/li><li><strong>Scrub<\/strong> your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the\n\u201cHappy Birthday\u201d song from beginning to end twice.<\/li><li><strong>Rinse<\/strong> your hands well under clean, running water.<\/li><li><strong>Dry<\/strong> your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t skip\na step in a recipe when preparing a meal, so be sure not to forget this\nimportant food safety practice to keep your loved ones healthy.
