The health and well-being of growing turkeys is top-of-mind for turkey growers as they routinely patrol barns in search of signs that could prove problematic. Monitoring the flock includes confirming the turkeys have continuous access to fresh water, clean feathers, round, prominent eyes and general curiosity with human interaction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure animal welfare practices are upheld throughout the industry, the National Turkey Federation works closely with America\u2019s turkey growers, veterinarians and industry experts to develop and maintain strict&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/animal-welfare\/standards\/\">Standards of Conduct<\/a>&nbsp;and Animal Care Guidelines for raising healthy birds in a safe environment at every stage of a turkey\u2019s lifecycle. These standards align with ethical treatment of animals, production of wholesome quality meat, respect and value of our workers and the wise use of land and water resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatturkey.org\/animal-welfare\/standards\/\">Access NTF\u2019s Standards of Conduct and Animal Care Guidelines<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, just like humans, animals sometimes get sick and need further medical attention. Therefore, in addition to the careful eye of the turkey grower, turkey flocks are provided licensed veterinary care to prevent and treat diseases. To ensure proper animal and public health, any medications are administered in a judicious fashion in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/resources-tools\/avma-policies\/aaap-guidelines-judicious-therapeutic-use-antimicrobials-poultry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">American Association of Avian Pathologist\u2019s Judicious Use Guidelines<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Below NTF answers questions regarding some of the top animal welfare concerns: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Are turkeys raised in cages?<\/strong> No. Turkeys are raised in specially designed, environmentally controlled barns that provide maximum protection from predators, disease and weather extremes. Adding hormones in poultry production is prohibited by federal law.
